Staying Safe and Independent in the Heatwave: Gerald’s Story & Summer Tips

July 4, 2025

The heatwave is here and for many of us, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy parks, gardens, and summer sunshine. But for people living with dementia, hot weather brings additional challenges - from staying hydrated to keeping safe.

At Herts Ability, we’re passionate about helping people live safely, independently, and confidently - whatever the weather. That’s why we’re combining practical summer advice with a story that perfectly captures what we do best.

Gerald’s Journey: Safe Driving with Dementia

When our client Gerald Boland from Flitwick was diagnosed with dementia in 2021, his first concern wasn’t just his health - it was whether he could continue to drive safely.

Thanks to a thorough assessment at our Luton centre, Gerald was recently re-evaluated and got fantastic news: he’s still safe to drive.

I’ve already recommended Herts Ability to others,” says Gerald.
“Sarah (Occupational Therapist) and James (Lead Driving Assessor) have been so supportive and knowledgeable.”

With our expert team by his side, Gerald is maintaining his independence, navigating life on his terms - and inspiring others to do the same.

Hot Weather and Dementia: How to Stay Cool and Safe!

Just like Gerald, many of our clients are still driving, gardening, or staying active during the summer - but heat brings risks, especially for those living with dementia. Here are some essential tips for staying cool, safe and comfortable:

☀️ Dress for the weather

Choose light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton. A wide-brimmed hat can also provide shade.

🏡 Keep your space cool

During the day, close blinds or curtains, especially in sun-facing rooms. In the evening, open windows to let cooler air in.

🚫 Avoid the midday sun

Stay indoors between 11am and 3pm when the sun is strongest. If heading out, stick to the shade and don’t forget sunscreen - reapply regularly.

💧 Stay hydrated

Leave jugs or beakers of water within easy reach. Offer high-water content foods like jelly, melon, soup, or even an ice lolly for a refreshing treat.

🧼 Cool off

Help your loved one enjoy a cool bath or shower, or offer a damp washcloth and iced water for dabbing the face and neck.

🤝 Stay connected

If you don’t live nearby, ask a neighbour or friend to check in. Sometimes a simple chat over a drink can make all the difference.
