Facing the Road Ahead with Herts Ability

May 2, 2025

When Gerald Boland received his dementia diagnosis in 2021, one of his first questions was, "Can I still drive safely?" Like many others facing similar news, the thought of losing independence behind the wheel was daunting.Gerald took the first important step by informing the DVLA and undergoing an initial driving assessment. Six months ago, he was told it was safe to continue driving - with a review to be conducted in six months' time. That review happened today.

Despite the progression of his dementia symptoms, the outcome remained the same: Gerald is still safe to drive, with another review advised in six months.

This time, however, he was also gently encouraged to prepare for the possibility of an unsafe outcome in future assessments.Gerald’s Experience
