Supporting Independence During Dementia Action Week

May 15, 2025

At Herts Ability, we are proud to support Dementia Action Week, a national initiative led by the Alzheimer's Society to raise awareness and encourage action to improve the lives of people affected by dementia!

This year, the campaign runs from May 19 to May 25, 2025, and focuses on the theme of 'Diagnosis is vital.'

It's a reminder that a timely diagnosis can open doors to support, treatment, and planning for the future.

Driving with Dementia: A Delicate Balance

One of the most challenging aspects for individuals with dementia and their families is the question of driving. A dementia diagnosis doesn't automatically mean the end of driving; instead, it calls for a careful assessment of safety and ability.

At Herts Ability, we offer fitness-to-drive assessments conducted by a team comprising Occupational Therapists and DVSA Approved Driving Instructors. These assessments provide clarity and peace of mind, ensuring that individuals can continue driving safely or transition to alternative transportation options when necessary.

Our Supportive Approach

We understand that discussing driving with someone diagnosed with dementia can be sensitive. Our team approaches each assessment with empathy and respect, creating a comfortable environment for open dialogue. The goal is not to judge but to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users.

In cases where continuing to drive is no longer safe, we assist individuals in exploring alternative transportation options and provide strategies to maintain independence and community engagement.

A Family's Perspective

Saimah, the daughter of an 87-year-old client, shared her experience:

"The process was handled with the highest level of care and professionalism. On assessment day, my father’s anxiety was palpable, but the reassuring atmosphere and helpful receptionist made a significant difference. Although cognitive tests proved challenging for him, the assessors treated him with utmost respect and dignity, alleviating any stress."

This client testimonial highlights our commitment to providing compassionate support during difficult decisions.
