Supporting Independence After Stroke: Herts Ability Marks Stroke Awareness Month 2026

Supporting Independence After Stroke: Herts Ability Marks Stroke Awareness Month 2026
Every day in the UK, around 240 people experience a stroke. Behind each number is a person whose life has been suddenly and profoundly changed - along with the lives of their families, friends, and communities.
This May, during Stroke Awareness Month, Herts Ability is proud to stand alongside stroke survivors and raise awareness of both prevention and recovery.
Stroke can affect movement, cognition, confidence, and independence. But with the right support, recovery is not only possible - it can open the door to renewed freedom.
Can You Drive Again After a Stroke?
One of the most common and important questions we hear is:
“Can I drive again after a stroke?”
The answer is: in many cases, yes.
Returning to driving is a significant milestone. It represents independence, confidence, and a return to everyday life. However, it’s also a process that must be approached carefully, with safety and wellbeing at its core.
At Herts Ability, we specialise in supporting individuals through this journey - helping stroke survivors understand their capabilities and, where appropriate, get back behind the wheel safely.
How Herts Ability Supports Stroke Recovery Through Driving
Our comprehensive driving support services are designed to assess, guide, and empower:
🚘 Driving Assessments
We provide specialist assessments to evaluate physical, cognitive, and visual abilities. These assessments ensure that any return to driving is both safe and appropriate.
🛠️ Vehicle Adaptations
For many people, simple adaptations can make driving possible again. This might include hand controls, left-foot accelerators, or other tailored modifications to suit individual needs.
👩⚕️ Expert Guidance
Our team includes Occupational Therapists and Approved Driving Instructors who understand the complexities of stroke recovery and driving requirements.
🧠 Cognitive Support
Driving involves concentration, reaction time, and decision-making. We help assess and rebuild these skills, giving clients confidence and clarity on the road.
📋 Navigating the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) Process
Returning to driving after a stroke involves notifying the DVLA and following specific medical guidelines. We guide clients through this process, making it less daunting and more manageable.

“Driving means freedom. Being told I was safe to drive again gave me my life back.”
Karen’s story is a powerful reminder that independence doesn’t have to end after illness - with the right support, it can begin again.
Stroke Prevention: Small Actions, Big Impact
Stroke Awareness Month is not only about recovery - it’s also about prevention.
One of the most important facts to know:
👉 High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for stroke - and it often has no symptoms.
A simple blood pressure check at your GP, local pharmacy, or even at home could be life-saving. Raising awareness of these small but critical actions is a key part of reducing stroke risk across the UK.
Supporting You Every Step of the Way
Whether you’re recovering from a stroke or supporting a loved one, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Herts Ability is here to provide expert advice, practical support, and encouragement every step of the way.
