Supporting Driving Independence After Brain Injury

May 18, 2026

Every 90 seconds, someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with a brain injury.

For many survivors, the impact goes far beyond initial recovery - it can affect independence, confidence, and the ability to carry out everyday activities such as driving.

For those rebuilding their lives, getting back behind the wheel is often more than transport. It represents freedom, autonomy, and a major milestone on the road to recovery.

At Herts Ability, we support individuals affected by brain injury to safely return to driving, rebuild confidence, or explore alternative mobility solutions tailored to their needs.

Raising Awareness During Action for Brain Injury Week

This year’s awareness campaign, Action for Brain Injury Week, from 18- 24 May, highlights the often hidden and fluctuating effects of brain injury - including fatigue, anxiety, memory difficulties, and cognitive overload.

These challenges can vary day to day, meaning even familiar tasks like driving, navigating traffic, or making quick decisions can feel overwhelming.

The campaign is led by Headway UK, a charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury and supporting individuals, families, and professionals across the UK.

How Brain Injury Can Affect Driving Ability

Brain injuries can impact a wide range of cognitive and physical functions essential for safe driving, including:

  • Reduced concentration and attention span
  • Memory challenges and confusion
  • Slower reaction times
  • Visual processing difficulties
  • Anxiety or reduced confidence on the road
  • Fatigue and fluctuating symptoms

Because these effects are often “invisible” and inconsistent, many people find it difficult to judge when they are ready to drive again safely.

A Real Recovery Journey: Chris’s Story

“I passed my test at 21 and was involved in a road traffic accident as a pedestrian. I spent six months in hospital and another two and a half years in recovery. It’s a long road - understanding your difficulties and overcoming them. But you can do it, as I have! I absolutely recommend Herts Ability. They’re incredibly accommodating and friendly.”

Chris’s experience reflects what many individuals go through after brain injury: a long but achievable journey back to independence.
