Staying Independent Behind the Wheel with Herts Ability: Carolyn's Story

For people living with a progressive neurological condition, maintaining independence can become increasingly challenging. Everyday activities that many take for granted - including driving - often require careful consideration, adaptation, and the right support.
For our client, Carolyn, continuing to drive safely has always been about staying independent while recognising and managing the changes brought about by her condition.
Thanks to the expert guidance and support of Herts Ability, she has been able to remain confident and safe behind the wheel for more than two decades.
Driving Safely with a Progressive Neurological Disorder
"Remaining independent with a progressive neurological disorder can be challenging," says Carolyn. "It requires being aware of the issues I face now, and those I may experience in the future. I want to be safe, feel safe, and know where to turn for honest advice and support."
Over the years, Carolyn has used Herts Ability's specialist driving assessment and tuition services proactively, giving her peace of mind and helping her adapt to changing needs.
From her very first phone call, she found the team welcoming and reassuring.
"The office staff explained everything clearly - the assessment process, the advice available and the fees involved. I immediately felt supported."
Keeping People on the Road, Not Taking Them Off It
Carolyn's first on-road assessment with Herts Ability took place around twenty years ago. Rather than feeling like a driving test, the experience focused on understanding her abilities and helping her remain a safe and independent driver.
"The team looked at my driving skills and safety with a view to keeping me on the road, not getting me off the road."
At that time, the recommendation was simple but effective: changing from a manual car to an automatic transmission. By removing the need to operate the clutch, Carolyn reduced the strain on her legs and was able to continue driving comfortably for many years.
Adapting to New Challenges
As her mobility changed over time, Carolyn arranged another driving assessment herself when increasing leg weakness began to affect her driving.
Following a thorough assessment, Herts Ability recommended hand controls to help reduce fatigue and improve comfort and safety.
She then undertook specialist lessons in one of Herts Ability's adapted vehicles.
"My instructors have always been knowledgeable, professional and incredibly patient –-especially during my first attempts at smooth braking!" Carolyn laughs. "They encouraged me, challenged me when needed, and supported me every step of the way."
Following further tuition and assessment, Carolyn was successfully approved as a safe driver with the recommended adaptations in place.
Building Confidence and Independence
For Carolyn, Herts Ability has provided much more than driving advice.
"I have no hesitation in recommending Herts Ability. They offer objective, honest advice combined with supportive teaching and encouragement. Their goal is to help people continue driving safely and independently for as long as possible."
She adds:
"It can only increase your safety and confidence on the road. And most importantly - have fun!"
