Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day 2026: How Herts Ability Supports Independence and Driving Confidence

May 18, 2026

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day (SCIAD) is a powerful reminder of resilience, rehabilitation, and the importance of accessible mobility. For many people, a spinal cord injury can change life instantly - but it does not mean losing independence.

At Herts Ability, we are proud to support SCIAD and the thousands of people living with spinal cord injuries across the UK by helping them regain confidence, freedom, and independence through driving.

What is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day?

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day is held annually in the UK to raise awareness of spinal cord injury (SCI) and its long-term impact.

In 2026, the awareness day will take place on Friday, 15 May 2026, highlighting:

  • Over 105,000 people currently living with spinal cord injuries in the UK
  • Around 4,400 new injuries each year
  • Approximately 12 people per day sustaining a spinal cord injury

Led by organisations such as the Spinal Injuries Association, the campaign focuses on improving care, challenging misconceptions, and promoting inclusion and accessibility.

The 2026 theme also highlights the importance of consistent spinal cord injury services and better coordination of care across the UK.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injury

The spinal cord is a vital part of the central nervous system, carrying messages between the brain and the rest of the body. These signals control movement, sensation, and essential bodily functions such as breathing, bladder control, and blood pressure.

When the spinal cord is damaged, these messages are disrupted. The impact varies depending on the location and severity of the injury:

  • Paraplegia: affects movement and sensation in the legs and lower body
  • Tetraplegia (quadriplegia): affects all four limbs and parts of the torso

No two spinal cord injuries are the same, and individual needs can vary significantly. That is why personalised assessment and rehabilitation are so important.

Driving After Spinal Cord Injury: Independence is Still Possible

A spinal cord injury can feel life-changing - but it does not have to mean giving up driving.

With the right adaptations, assessments, and training, many people can safely return to the road. This is where specialist support becomes essential.

At Herts Ability, we provide expert, person-centred driving assessments and rehabilitation support to help individuals regain mobility and confidence.
