What to Expect at Your Assessment
Your assessment is designed to be relaxed, supportive, and tailored to you. You’re welcome to bring a friend or family member along for reassurance.
1. A Warm Welcome and Private Consultation
You’ll meet one of our experienced Occupational Therapists, who will take you to a private space to discuss:
- Your mobility needs
- Your lifestyle and daily challenges
- Any medical conditions that may affect your mobility
2. Understanding Your Needs
We’ll talk through how your physical and cognitive abilities may impact:
- Using a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair
- Manoeuvring safely
- Transporting or storing equipment
Where appropriate, we may carry out simple cognitive checks to ensure you can use equipment safely and confidently.
3. Hands-On Experience
Next, you’ll head outside to try different scooters or powered wheelchairs in a safe environment.
You’ll:
- Learn how the equipment works
- Practice basic controls
- Build confidence at your own pace
4. Real-World Practice
Once you’re comfortable, you’ll take part in a guided route on local pavements, supported by your OT.
This helps assess your ability to:
- Control speed and steering
- Navigate safely around obstacles
- Make safe decisions when crossing roads
- Maintain awareness of your surroundings
5. Personalised Feedback and Recommendations
After your session, your OT will provide:
- Clear, honest feedback
- Expert recommendations tailored to your needs
- A full written report for your reference
