Learning Disability Week 2026: Helping People with a Learning Disability Be Seen, Heard and Valued

Learning Disability Week 2026 is a time to celebrate achievements, challenge inequalities and ensure that people with a learning disability are seen, heard and valued. This year’s theme, “Do You See Me?”, highlights the importance of recognising the talents, ambitions and contributions of people with a learning disability.
Despite progress, significant inequalities remain. Only 6% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment, even though 86% would like to work.
More than 2,000 people with a learning disability and autistic people are detained in mental health hospitals because appropriate community support is unavailable.
Tragically, people with a learning disability die on average 20 years earlier than the general population, and around two in five of those deaths could be prevented.
These inequalities are not fair, and together we can help create positive change.
Celebrating Confidence and Independence Through Driving
At Herts Ability Driving School, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to gain confidence, independence and freedom. Driving is about far more than getting from A to B - it opens doors to employment, education and greater independence.
As part of Learning Disability Week, we were delighted to welcome students from Lonsdale School for a truly memorable day.
Ten amazing young people experienced the excitement of driving for the first time. Some used adapted driving controls, while two students drove directly from their wheelchairs in our specially modified Mercedes-Benz. The enthusiasm and sense of achievement throughout the day were incredible.
Our CEO, Sean, said:
“The smiles, excitement and confidence were incredible.”
Every student received a certificate and memories to treasure. For some, this marked the beginning of their driving journey, with several students already booking full driving assessments. We look forward to supporting them every step of the way!
