Honouring Our Communities: Celebrating Black History Month 2026 at Herts Ability

October 8, 2026

“The opportunities I have today were made possible by those who came before me.”

October is Black History Month, a time to recognise, celebrate and learn from the history, achievements and contributions of Black communities.

For Black History Month 2026, the theme “Honouring Our Communities” provides an opportunity to reflect not only on the people who have shaped our past, but also on the individuals making a difference in our communities today.

At Herts Ability, we’re proud to celebrate one of those people: Ayo Oluwole, Driving Assessor and Occupational Therapist.

Through her work, Ayo supports people to explore their driving potential, develop confidence and take meaningful steps towards greater independence.

Meet Ayo: Supporting Independence Through Driving

For many people, being able to drive can be about much more than getting from A to B.

Access to driving can support independence, confidence, employment, education and connection with family, friends and the wider community.

As a Driving Assessor and Occupational Therapist at Herts Ability, Ayo plays an important role in helping people understand what may be possible for them.

Whether someone is exploring driving for the first time, returning to driving or considering how their needs may affect their ability to drive safely, an assessment can help provide clarity, guidance and reassurance.

For Ayo, supporting people on that journey is also connected to something much bigger: creating opportunities for people to live more independently.

“The Opportunities I Have Today…”

Reflecting on what Black History Month means to her, Ayo says:

“Black History Month reminds me that the opportunities I have today were made possible by those who came before me. Their courage inspires me to push forward and create space for future generations.”

Her words capture an important part of Black History Month: remembering that progress doesn’t happen in isolation.

The opportunities many of us have today have been shaped by the courage, determination, creativity and contributions of people who came before us.

Their stories matter.

Their achievements matter.

And the opportunities we help create for others matter too.

Honouring Our Communities Through Everyday Action

The theme “Honouring Our Communities” is a powerful reminder that celebrating community isn't only about looking back.

It’s also about recognising the people who are making a difference today.

At Herts Ability, that means celebrating colleagues like Ayo and recognising the compassion, expertise and commitment she brings to her work every day.

It also means celebrating the people we support.

Every person who develops greater confidence, explores new possibilities or takes a step towards greater independence contributes to a stronger, more inclusive community.

Sometimes, making a difference can feel like a big achievement.

Sometimes, it happens through the everyday moments: listening to someone, helping them understand their options, building their confidence or supporting them to take the next step.

Creating Opportunities for Future Generations

Ayo's reflection also highlights the importance of representation and opportunity.

When people can see themselves represented in different professions, organisations and communities, it can help challenge assumptions about what is possible.

Creating opportunities for future generations means making sure people are encouraged to develop their skills, pursue their ambitions and contribute their own experiences and perspectives.

For organisations like Herts Ability, inclusion is part of creating a community where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute and thrive.

Celebrating Black History Month at Herts Ability

This Black History Month, we're proud to recognise Ayo and the contribution she makes to the Herts Ability community.

Her story is a reminder that honouring our communities means remembering the people who helped create the opportunities we have today - while recognising the people who are helping shape tomorrow.

Black History Month gives us an opportunity to listen, learn and celebrate.

But the values behind it - inclusion, opportunity, representation, respect and community - are important all year round.

As Ayo puts it, the courage of those who came before us can inspire us to “push forward and create space for future generations.”

That is something worth celebrating.

Who Has Inspired You?

This Black History Month, we’d love to hear from you.

Who has inspired you to make a difference in your community?

It could be a family member, teacher, colleague, friend, community leader or someone whose story has stayed with you.

Happy Black History Month 2026 from everyone at Herts Ability.
