Herts Ability Supports GBS/CIDP Awareness Month 2025

May is GBS/CIDP Awareness Month - a time to shine a spotlight on two rare but life-altering neurological conditions: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). With more than a million people affected worldwide, the need for awareness, early diagnosis, and support has never been more critical.
At Herts Ability, we see the real-world impact of these conditions every day.
One of those stories belongs to our remarkable client, Claire, who was assessed and declared Fit to Drive at our Harlow Centre. Her journey is one of resilience, hope, and the power of reclaiming independence.
Claire’s Story: From Diagnosis to Driving Again
“Six years ago, I noticed occasional pins and needles in my feet and thought nothing of it. Six months later, I found myself unable to stand, walk, or even care for myself.”
Claire’s life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy NF155 CIDP, a chronic autoimmune disorder that attacks the nervous system. Her diagnosis led to an extended hospital stay, first at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery in London, followed by rehabilitation at the Wellington Hospital.
“This debilitating disease has left me disabled, likely permanently. Raising awareness of CIDP - and its acute counterpart, GBS - is absolutely crucial.”A confident and experienced driver of over 40 years, Claire’s diagnosis cast serious doubt on whether she’d ever drive again. But with partial recovery and encouragement from her neurologist, she dared to imagine getting back behind the wheel.
The Role of Herts Ability
“The idea of driving again filled me with hope. I contacted Herts Ability to understand what the process involved, and they were absolutely incredible. They answered all my questions, calmed my nerves, and gave me the confidence to move forward.”Thanks to our supportive team and Claire’s determination, she has taken a major step in reclaiming her independence - and her story is just one of many that illustrate why access to occupational driving assessments and adaptations is so important.
