Herts Ability Proudly Supports Stroke Awareness Month 2025

Every day in May, 240 people in the UK experience the life-changing effects of a stroke. Mums, dads, grandparents, young people - even children - can be left unable to move, speak, see, or swallow. It’s a sudden and devastating event that affects not only the survivor but their entire support network.

That’s why Stroke Awareness Month, also known as Make May Purple, is so important. Organised annually by the Stroke Association, it aims to raise awareness about strokes and highlight the vital support available to those affected.

The Stroke Association is the only UK charity offering lifelong support to stroke survivors and their families - and this May, Herts Ability is proud to stand with them.

Life After Stroke: What About Driving?

One common and emotional concern after a stroke is: “Will I ever drive again?”

The answer is: Possibly - yes!

After a stroke, you are not allowed to drive for at least one month. But many people go on to return to driving safely - and that’s where Herts Ability can help.

How We Support Stroke Survivors

Driving Assessments: Our experienced team can carry out a full driving assessment to evaluate your physical and cognitive abilities behind the wheel.

Tailored Car Adaptations: If needed, we identify what physical adaptations - such as hand controls or left-foot accelerators - can help you drive safely.

Specialist Support: Our Occupational Therapists and Approved Driving Instructors work closely with you to find the safest and most comfortable method of car control.

Cognitive Peace of Mind: Driving is a complex cognitive task. Even if your recovery seems complete, an assessment can provide clarity and reassurance for you and your loved ones.

Liaison with the DVLA: Once you’re ready, we’ll help guide you through the process of communicating with the DVLA about your return to driving.

Real Stories: Meet Maciej

“Getting back on the road, driving, is a sign of progress in my rehabilitation. My advice for other people that have suffered a stroke would be: Don’t give up! Even the smallest steps count! Oh, and don’t be afraid to reach out to Herts Ability - they’ll help with advice and point you in the right direction.” Maciej Monczak, Herts Ability client
