From Volunteer to Chief Operating Officer: My 15-Year Journey with Herts Ability by Mark Thackeray

When I first walked through the doors of Herts Ability as a volunteer in 2011, I never imagined the journey that lay ahead.
Fifteen years later, I am incredibly proud and honoured to have been appointed Chief Operating Officer of a charity that has not only shaped my career but has become such an important part of my life.
Like many people who join Herts Ability, I came with a desire to make a difference. What I found was a team of dedicated people, inspiring clients and countless opportunities to learn, grow and help others regain their independence.
My career began in our Mobility Centre, where I trained as a Driving Instructor and Driver Assessor. Since then, I've had the privilege of supporting hundreds of people whose ability to drive had been affected by illness, injury or changes in their health.
Helping People Stay Independent
One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Herts Ability has always been helping people maintain or regain their independence through driving.
For many of our clients, driving represents far more than simply getting from A to B. It means freedom, confidence, connection with family and friends, and the ability to continue living life on their own terms.
Every assessment tells a different story. Some clients are recovering from a stroke, while others are adapting to a new diagnosis or changes that come with ageing. Each person arrives with unique challenges, hopes and goals, and it's a privilege to work alongside them to find practical solutions that enable them to drive safely and confidently once again.
Knowing that our work can help someone return to work, visit loved ones or simply enjoy the freedom of independent travel is something I never take for granted.
Growing with Herts Ability
Over the years, I've been fortunate to progress through a variety of roles, including Lead Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and Assistant Manager.
Each position has brought new experiences, fresh challenges and valuable opportunities to develop my skills while contributing to the wider organisation. Throughout every step of that journey, I've been supported by exceptional colleagues, volunteers, trustees and partners who share an unwavering commitment to improving lives across Hertfordshire.
Their passion and dedication continue to inspire me every day.
Looking Ahead
To now be entrusted with the role of Chief Operating Officer is a genuine privilege.
I'm grateful for the confidence that has been placed in me and excited about the opportunities ahead. My focus will be on building upon the fantastic work already taking place across Herts Ability, ensuring we continue to develop our services, support our communities and respond to the changing needs of the people we serve.
As we look to the future, I'm committed to leading with enthusiasm, collaboration and a determination to ensure Herts Ability continues making a positive difference to people's lives.
After 15 years, I still feel just as passionate about our mission as I did on my very first day as a volunteer. I can't wait to see what we achieve together next!
