Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025
Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025 from everyone at Herts Ability! Today is a global reminder that accessibility, inclusion, and independence are not just ideals - we all have a role to play in making them a reality. Every assessment we carry out, every workshop we deliver, and every story we hear strengthens our belief that people of all abilities deserve the freedom to live life on their own terms.
Thanks to your support - whether you donate, volunteer, or simply share our mission - we’re able to help more people across Hertfordshire and beyond to gain confidence, stay mobile, and feel empowered.
This year, we’re celebrating by sharing two inspiring journeys that remind us why our work matters every single day.
Sarah’s Driving Independence: Overcoming Nerves and Achieving Success
When Sarah first came to Herts Ability, she was eager to learn but anxious about the theory test process. With personalised guidance from our Theory Test Workshop - designed specifically for individuals who need a little extra support - Sarah quickly found her confidence growing.
Week by week, her nerves eased as she developed strategies for understanding questions, improving focus, and revising at her own pace. Supported by her family, our patient instructors, Sarah not only built her skills… She passed her theory test!
Her mum told us:
“The support she received has been invaluable. Thank you, Herts Ability!”
Sarah’s determination and success perfectly capture the spirit of what we aim to do: make every road to independence smoother, safer, and more achievable.
Melanie’s Road to Freedom: Adapting for a New Chapter
Independence means different things to different people. For Melanie, who faced physical challenges following her diagnosis of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, getting back on the road felt like regaining a vital piece of her life.
Working closely with our specialist mobility team, Melanie explored a wide range of vehicle adaptations to find a solution tailored to her needs. Together, we identified the right equipment, fitted it safely, and supported her throughout the entire process - from assessment to getting back behind the wheel.
Today, Melanie is driving again with confidence, comfort, and renewed independence.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that resilience, innovation, and the right support can transform lives.
Creating Opportunities - Together!
Stories like Sarah’s and Melanie’s demonstrate exactly why Herts Ability exists. With your help, we can ensure that more people across the region have access to:
- Mobility and driving assessments
- Theory Test support
- Vehicle adaptation guidance
- Assistive technology advice
- Accessible workshops for daily living
- And so much more!
Every share, donation, and act of support helps us reach more people who could benefit from a little extra help on their path to independence.
